Diva Challenge 257

Guest this week is CZT Amy Broady, who challenged us to include a metallic feature in our ZIA - bold or subtle, a major feature, or a finishing touch.  I created my entire ZIA with metallic media in my black journal.  The chainging outline is done with Pitt silver artist pen, I used Y&C Gel Extreme for detail work and the fill is Finetec watercolor.  I really love the Finetec metallic water colors.  A wide range of colors from whites to the bronze and copper and they go on the page like cream. I used the Y&C gel for the mooka, featherfall, fescu and zingers.  Some shading done with Zenstone. The silver looks white in this photograph, but it is all silver.  No white other than the light zenstone shading.

Square One: Zonked

This week's focus pattern is Zonked.  I haven't done this pattern before and really like the look of it.  I mixed it with a wandering Zander and printemps.  Here is the stepout for Zonked: http://tanglepatterns.com/2014/06/how-to-draw-zonked.html

Diva challenge 256

This week we are using Laura Harms' tangles Artoo and Boo-kee named after her boys.  My photo isn't the greatest. I am not home but traveling.  Make do with what you have, huh?

Our Tangled Lives

This week I presented the prompt to the group.  It centered around old eyes.  When you look at the world through old eyes and see only grays.  Not a depression but just a lack of seeing.  And if you look at the world through the eyes of a child, or take a new look at life, the colors and fantasy grow.  I drew my old eye in the bottom left and the monotone color, then the colors start blooming and fantasy lives as the new eye looks from the upper corner.  "Creativity is giving yourself permission to see things differently."

Square One: Narwal

This week's focus pattern is Narwal.  This was a pattern that gave me fits and one day I sat down and just drew it over and over.  Here is my basic one.

Molygon Abundies

I started this page in my new journal Monday while having coffee with fellow CZT CJ Petersen.  We had a nice visit and I started working on this.  Abundies morphed into Inapod with Molygon, Meringue, Tripoli, Dragonair with Featherfall (thanks to CZT Irene Lesner for this combination), Verdigogh, Tumbleweed, Mooka and a Gem.  To be honest, the gem wasn't intended - I had an oops which created a new opportunity!  Colros all in the blue and green family - quite a few shades.  Prismacolor.

Believe a little bit more

Working with brusho and stencils - some white acrylic worked in.  Just letting myself have some permission to just play - not worrying about the outcome.  Silly bird - not perfection, more whimsical.  Bubbles in the sky.  I like the background.  This is a practice piece trying to let myself experiment a bit more in other media - not just Zentangle - with the end result coming together.

Diva Challenge 255

The past to the present -- I took a tile from my very first class from CZT Sue Clark in April of 2013 (left below) and redid it today.  Patterns are Zander, Florz, Bales and Tipple.  I think the biggest change for me is the difference in shading.  Plus I finally allow myself to change a pattern a little.  My zander has a bit of rounding and a vine entwined, and some loose strands.  Florz changes up in size, and I added an aura to it.  Bales and Tipple are basically true to the original pattern.

Week 07 Our Tangled Lives

This week we are challenged to simplicity.  Less is more.  I did a simple page - 2 colors of gelatos and two stencil patterns with two zentangle patterns done with micron pen.  "All you need is less."  I didn't plan out the "two's" - it just happened.  There is a message - Verdigogh is reminiscent of a sprig of Rosemary which is the herb of love and remembrance.  We have lost so many great people this year - both in our personal lives and in our public lives.  The page is blank but the list is long.

Eye of the beholder

Here's what I have been working on this morning.  I am putting together a prompt for Our Tangled Lives about looking through the world through old eyes.  I have always been challenged by drawing facial features - especially eyes.  So I decided to start working on overcoming this challenge.  I drew the eye lightly in graphite, and then worked this in colored pencil.  I think this might actually grow on me - I am really pleased with what I did.  I think the real challenge will be in creating a matching eye!!!  Just to show how time consuming this is - I used 12 different colors of colored pencil to create this one eye.

Journal

I have done a couple of journal pages - one is my daily calendar.  The other - I have been playing some more with gems.  I didn't set out to make this an actual journal page, but watching TV I started drawing lines on it and it just happened.  That is the most fun!

Diva Challenge 254

Valentine's Day is fast approaching.  The Diva challenged us to show our hearts.  I am not a "flowery" romantic person any more, so I went for a hint of darkness in my pattern.  Instead of the normal patterns that I am sure others will use that are flowing, flowery, heart-shaped, I went with crescent moon morphed into Mr. E. I looking at it now, it is almost as thought the heart is broken - or shatterred.  I didn't intentionally go for that effect.

All of the shading and color in this piece are Conte a Paris pastel pencils.  The red is shaded with the flat side of a paper stump - 3 layers.  The pattern is shaded with black and just blended once.

Square One: Printemps

The focus pattern this week is Printemps.  This is a go-to pattern for me - I use it a lot as background filler.  To make it the focus, I used it in different sizes funneled by a string, and then using graphite and smearing it, used it a ghost background.  I also filled in a spiral on the large spiral.

Journal

It was time for me to work on another journal page - one where I just put a bunch of patterns on the pages and join them.  I wasn't as happy with the joining this time - but it worked.  These pages let me see how patterns work together.
I used quite a few patterns in this - some new and some old.  Patterns used: Aquee, oringel, Oh well, betweed, Flormeoba Rose, molygon, African Artist, Tripoli, printemps, verdigogh, Kobweb, Tumbleweed, Hamadox, grapes

Our Tangled Lives Week 5

This week we were challenged to use fruit or vegetable to begin our page.  This was a fun prompt. Actually, I had experimented with celery last summer and had some of the sheets left. So I took one of the sheets, I gessoed out some parts of the celery prints, and turned it into a bouquet of flowers. Outside my comfort zone - I have never composed a bouquet of flowers. Made me think of a magiciian turning something into a bouquet of flowers. I then reduced the size of the finished piece to fit my journal and made a photocopy. The background of my pages is Twinkling H2Os. Matisse said: "There are always flowers for those who want to see them"
This is my starting page.

Conte pencil review

As part of the design team at Blue Twig Studio, I did a review on the Conte a Paris pastel colored pencils.  I love them.  So nice to layer and blend.  Here is a link to my review: https://bluetwigstudio.wordpress.com/2016/01/29/conte-pencil-review/

And here is one of the pictures I did using the pencils:

Diva Challenge 253

Diva Challenge 253 is using the new Zentangle pattern Molygon.  I love this pattern.  I like to make it meander - I do the same with tripoli.  I decided to work on a monochromatic olor scheme and use this to practice more blending.with colored pencils. And I had to add some mooka!
